Management should define the decision to be supported, identify the evidence a reviewer will expect and test whether the operating arrangements can be demonstrated consistently. The strongest preparation is specific to the business model and leaves a clear record of ownership, challenge and closure.

Evidence and workstreams

A controlled workstream normally connects the approved business narrative, governance records, risk assessment, policies, procedures, provider arrangements, staffing assumptions, management information and implementation evidence. Each item should have an owner, status, dependency and review point. Contradictions should be resolved before material is presented externally.

Questions for boards and management

Can management explain why the control design is proportionate? Are key assumptions supported by records? Do outsourced arrangements identify retained accountability? Are exceptions visible, escalated and closed? Could an independent reviewer trace a statement from policy through procedure to operating evidence without relying on oral explanation?

Practical illustration

Hypothetical illustration: a firm states that higher-risk customers receive enhanced review, but its onboarding workflow does not define triggers, approval authority or retained evidence. The issue is not solved by rewriting the policy alone. The workflow, ownership, system configuration, sample records and management reporting must be aligned.
